Your ac s air filter is usually found in these 2 places. On horizontal hvac units with the return duct attached to the side of the air handler the filter often fits in a slot on the return air intake side of the unit. This arrow needs to point in the direction of your hvac s airflow. So why put an hvac system up in the attic at all.

We don t have basements due to flooding. Just had to replace my furnace coil and condenser this weekend. Most updated central air conditioned homes have a new air conditioner split system meaning the ac is broken up into parts. Return vent with grate in place on the left and open return vent without the grate where you can see the filter and ductwork on the right.

Air filters come in all different sizes and range from about an inch thick to a few inches thick. On vertical air handlers with the return air duct entering on the top of the air handler the filter often slides into a slot above the hvac unit. Well mainly it s a way to save space. Btw in east texas all furnaces coils blowers go in the attic.

Only the condenser is outside of course. If you have an attic vent in your ceiling like the one pictured further above the arrow should point up toward the hvac unit. An outdoor unit which houses the fan condenser and compressor and an indoor unit which holds the evaporator and fan. Find the right filter size.
